Gustaf Lagerbielke delivers honest verdict on where his future lies at Celtic

Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke has dropped some honest insight regarding where his future at Parkhead lies this summer.

Brought in for £3 million from Elfsborg last summer, the Sweden international hasn’t managed to nail down a place under Brendan Rodgers.

Overall, the 24-year-old has made just ten appearances for the Bhoys, registering once against Feyenoord to end Celtic’s 10-year wait for a home victory in the Champions League [Transfermarkt].

Nevertheless, it is apparent he isn’t viewed as a first-team regular, which is likely to pave the way for an exit this summer.

Serie A outfit Lecce were keen to sign Lagerbielke in January before a deal fell through; regardless, he has now delivered some intriguing observations surrounding his future at Celtic.

Moving on to how he feels about the market period and the openings it may provide for him, Lagerbielke responded: “Just like any other player, I want to play and make a difference. I’m ready to do that if the opportunity arises.”

It should be noted, the outlet state that Lagerbielke has not had a conversation with Rodgers about his next steps.

On how he has developed at Celtic, he said: “Very instructive. I have developed a lot and become a better player. I have taken a lot with me. I’m excited about the future and I think I’ll take a lot with me from Celtic to the next team I join.”

Later on, the former Degerfors man was honest when asked if he would or wouldn’t be staying at Parkhead: “It’s difficult to say anything until something is finalised. I have a contract with Celtic, but it’s no secret that I want to play.”

Gustaf Lagerbielke’s comments could potentially signal an exit

It wouldn’t be surprising if Lagerbielke were to exit Celtic this summer amid his lack of involvement, and his comments fuel the fire in that respect.

Clearly, he values the experiences that he has been able to sample at Parkhead; however, his desire to be a first-team regular is palpable, which at this stage in his career is vital to his development.

Looking forward, a clean break between both parties appears to be the most likely outcome, but where he could potentially end up remains to be seen.
