One dead in explosion and fire at Polish armaments factory

One person has died in an explosion and fire at an armaments factory in Poland.

The person who died was a 59-year-old employee, a police spokesman told the news channel TVN24 on Monday. Initial findings suggest the fire broke out in one of the warehouses of the MESKO armaments company in Skarżysko-Kamienna, around 125 kilometres south of Warsaw.

The plant's fire brigade managed to extinguish the flames. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated.

The Onet.pl online news portal reported that the director of the factory, Elżbieta Śreniawska, said that there had been an explosion in the rocket fuel centre, a relatively new part of the complex. One person was killed and another injured.

Local media reported a rescue helicopter had been sent to the site of the accident. MESKO products include anti-tank guided missiles and shoulder-launched short-range anti-aircraft missile systems.
