The Florida State baseball community lost legendary longtime head coach Mike Martin in early February. Now, the current team and current head coach Link Jarrett are hoping to finish the job for him in the College World Series.

Jarrett’s comments came after Florida State won its Super Regional against UConn. The Seminoles were able to win that series in just two games, with the second win being a 12-inning thriller.

“He means so much and I think about him all the time,” Link Jarrett said. “I honestly think sometimes about how he would handle a situation in a game. I thought about the ceremony that this stadium opened up to, to start, not our season, but it really started the 2024 events here.”

Link Jarrett, a Tallahassee native himself, played at Florida State from 1991 to 1994. That was during Mike Martin’s tenure as the head coach of the Seminoles and during that stretch he led the team to the College World Series three times. Jarrett would later go on to briefly be an assistant coach under Martin.

“He was a remarkable man, just a father figure, like a second dad to me,” Jarrett said. “I thought about his management of games and things that came up. It’s a different era with things we deal with right now but I’m proud of what he helped me learn along the way on the field and off.”

Mike Martin more than earned his status as a legendary figure at Florida State. He led the baseball program from 1980 through the 2019 season. During that time, he won 2,029 games, making him the winningest college baseball coach of all time. He also led the team to 17 College World Series appearances and was the runner-up twice under him. Now, Link Jarrett wants to finish the job and win the College World Series for the legendary coach.

“For him now, there’s one more thing that I want to do, and we all know what that is,” Jarrett said. “This, to me, is a step towards that ultimate quest. I fought for it as a player, I fought for it and didn’t get it done as a coach a couple of years ago but the mindset of this team and the approach is to go finish that off, and go finish it off for him.”

This year’s trip to Omaha and the College World Series is the first for Florida State since Mike Martin retired in 2019.
