Former Penn State wrestler Terrell Barraclough picks transfer destination; where will he compete next?

Penn State wrestler Terrell Barraclough.

Penn State lost just one wrestler to the NCAA transfer portal following the 2023-2024 season. Now, that competitor, middleweight Terrell Barraclough, has picked where he will wrestle next. The graduate senior is moving on to Utah Valley, he announced on Instagram by saying he is “coming home.” The former Nittany Lion is a Kaysville, Utah native, which is about an hour north of the university, which competes in the Big 12 for wrestling.

“Penn State its been real,” Barraclough wrote on Instagram when he entered the portal. “It has been one of the greatest privileges to be amongst legends and great people. I forever will be grateful for each of my brothers and coaches.”

Barraclough spent five seasons in State College and has one year of eligibility remaining. According to WrestleStat, he was 42-19 all-time in blue and white. But, he competed mostly at open tournaments. He wrestled at 149, 157, 165, and 174 pounds during his time on head coach Cael Sanderson’s team. In 2023-2024, he was 12-2, which included a 2-1 mark in dual meets filling in for Carter Starocci. Barraclough did not have an obvious home in the 2024-2025 lineup, however, which is surely why he decided to move on. He will be able to compete for a starting job right away at Utah Valley, though what weight he would prefer to find a spot in the lineup at is unclear.

Penn State wrestling 2024-2025 outlook

Barraclough moving on did not impact the Penn State starting lineup in 2024-2025. But, that does not mean it is set in stone. Many questions linger. Braeden Davis, last year’s starter at 125 pounds, is bulking up for a move to 133 pounds. Will he knock returning starter Aaron Nagao out of that slot in the process? Time will tell. At 149, will Shayne Van Ness be back from injury to reclaim the weight he was an All-American at? Is Levi Haines moving up to 165 pounds and Mitchell Mesenbrink down to 157? Where will Carter Starocci compete after signaling an intent to move up from 174 pounds? Those are just some of the questions facing head coach Cael Sanderson and co., this summer.
