When the Florida State baseball team clinched a berth in the 2024 College World Series on Saturday afternoon, the Seminoles were the only school on the eight-team bracket.
Now, there is only one spot remaining.
Georgia and N.C. State are scheduled to wrap up their Athens Super Regional tonight at 7 p.m. after splitting the first two games. The Wolfpack rolled to an 18-1 victory in the opener, and the Bulldogs came back for an 11-2 win on Sunday.
No matter who wins that game, it will be an all ACC-SEC field at this year’s College World Series.
If N.C. State can clinch the final spot, the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference will each have four teams in the field. If Georgia wins, the SEC will have five spots and the ACC three.
The ACC schools already assured of joining Florida State in Omaha are North Carolina and Virginia. The Tar Heels swept West Virginia in two games, while the Cavaliers did the same to Kansas State.
The four SEC schools already in the CWS field are Tennessee, Kentucky, Florida and Texas A&M.
Florida State, which is making its first World Series appearance since 2019, will face Tennessee in the first round this Friday.
The Volunteers, who are the No. 1 national seed, needed three games to dispatch of Evansville in the Knoxville Super Regional. They won the opener 11-6, dropped the second game 10-8, then rolled in a 12-1 rout on Sunday.
Tennessee is 55-12 on the season, while No. 8 seed Florida State is 47-15.
The game will be a rematch of FSU head coach Link Jarrett and Volunteers head coach Tony Vitello. In 2022, Jarrett took a heavy underdog Notre Dame team into Knoxville and stunned Tennessee in the Super Regional round. The Volunteers were the No. 1 seed that year as well.
Game times for the opening games of the College World Series are scheduled to be announced tonight.
