A spokesperson from National Highways said: “Works are to replace the expansion joints and waterproofing to the bridge, which is critical to maintaining and improving safety to the structure.”

As a result, the section of road will be shut between 8pm and 6am for more than two weeks.

Overnight lane closures will begin this Wednesday (June 12) for two nights, which will be managed by temporary traffic lights.

Then on Friday (June 14), the bridge will be shut from 8pm for the whole weekend. It will reopen at 6am on Monday (June 17).

The second-weekend closure will be on Friday, June 21 until Monday, June 24.

A diversion route has been put in place for motorists

The work should be completed by Friday, June 28.

The road will be closed from the East Malling and Larkfield Parish Council Office to a point across the bridge marked by a barrier.

A 6.63km diversion route has been put in place – which takes around seven minutes.

Drivers will need to go via Leybourne Way, A228 Castle Way, A228 Leybourne Interchange, A228 Leybourne Bypass, A20 Ashton Way, A20 London Road and vice versa.

National Highways has confirmed access for pedestrians will be allowed during the works.

The section of the M20 underneath the bridge will remain open.
