Middlesbrough's marquee summer signing in each of the past ten transfer windows, with only three still at club

Middlesbrough will be spending the summer trying to assemble a squad capable of securing promotion to the Premier League next season.

With Michael Carrick at the helm they have every chance of doing just that, but additions will be needed to make a top flight return a real possibility.

There may be some departures too, with the likes of Hayden Hackney, Seny Dieng and Rav van den Berg all linked with Premier League moves.

Middlesbrough will not have an abundance of money to spend on new recruits this summer, but funds raised from sales could be key to building a squad ready to battle for a play-off spot at the very least.

Boro’s transfer record remains the £15 million they spent to sign Britt Assombalonga in 2017 and it is highly unlikely they will be breaking that this summer.

However, the following are the most expensive summer signings ahead of each of the past ten seasons with statistics taken from Transfermarkt.
