A pupil at a Fenland special school is hoping to boost fundraising efforts to help repair one of its essential facilities.
Robin Barnett, who attends Meadowgate Academy in Wisbech, is set to run/walk the full length of the pier in Southend on Sea this coming weekend.
He hopes his efforts on Saturday, June 15, to complete the 2.6miles distance will raise around £500 towards the school’s fundraising target of £40,000 to repair its hydrotherapy pool’s heating system.
The fundraising was launched after three bids to the Department for Education for cash to carry-out the essential repairs were rejected.
The pool is the only one of its type in Fenland and its facilities include hoist systems that can safely lift pupils with physical disabilities between the changing rooms and pool.
Robin’s proud dad, Paul, said: “The pool is vital for pupils with complex medical and health needs and provides much-needed access to physiotherapy.
“Hydrotherapy promotes normal body development, decreases pain, and supports general health for pupils with complex health conditions, but for it to work properly, the water must be heated to 34 degrees to have any therapeutic benefits.
“Southend on Sea Pier is the longest pier in the world with a length of 1.3 miles. This means Robin will complete a full distance of 2.6 miles to raise money.”
