OU head basketball coach Porter Moser has been all for trying to continue the Bedlam basketball tradition. When addressing the topic last season, he said OSU coach Mike Boynton and himself were not against it.
Boynton is out, and Steve Lutz is in. But what we’ve learned? Nothing has changed. And Lutz gave everybody an idea of what could be coming.
In talking to CBS’ Jon Rothstein, Lutz there are no contracts yet, but a Bedlam battle is on track to be played at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City in mid-December.
“I think why not? It’s meant a lot to the state and it’s been a rivalry,” said Moser back in February. “There will be a lot of things semantic-wise to get done. But why not for the future. I just — I think it’s something I’m not against. It’s just figuring it out. Figuring it out, I think that’s going to be the biggest key is that. But it’s been a meaningful thing for the state in all sports so I don’t know why not?”
Moser was able to strike his first real Bedlam blow last season. OU swept the Cowboys and nobody will forget the finish in Stillwater. Javian McCollum hit a desperation three-point shot as time expired to give the Sooners the victory.
Moser was asked after that game about a fitting way to close Bedlam. Again, he just wasn’t buying it.
“I personally don’t think this is the last time we play,” said Moser in February. “I see a world where this great rivalry continues. Don’t know when that is based on a lot of logistical factors but I see a world of when this great rival continues.”
Bedlam football continues to be in limbo. But this is the second big-time sport to suggest having a neutral site for Bedlam.
OU softball head coach Patty Gasso said the same thing last month. Saying that OU and OSU are in discussions of having a one-off game at OGE Field at Devon Park in OKC during the 2025 season.
