Apple is bringing its Vision Pro headset to nine markets outside the US for the first time since launching the VR headset in February.

The mixed reality device is set to be available in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore from June 28 onwards, while Australia, Canada, France, Germany and the UK are set to follow on July 12. The price in Europe is set at €3,999.

At its annual WWDC event for software developers, Apple also announced an improved operating system version for the Vision Pro, which costs upwards of $3,500 before tax in the US.

The company sought to gloss over the lukewarm response to the VR headset in many reviews. "The enthusiasm for Apple Vision Pro has been extraordinary, and we are thrilled to introduce the magic of spatial computing to more customers around the world," said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

The headset combines digital content and real surroundings in what's known as AR (augmented reality) or mixed reality into Apple's first major new product in more than a decade.

In addition to AR uses, which have most potential in digital workplaces, the headset can also be used to completely immerse you a digital world, without showing you the room around you.

Apple believes its Vision Pro headset will be used education, video conferencing, music production with 3D controls and immersive stargazing, as well as streaming content and gaming.

Facebook parent company Meta is currently among Apple's biggest rivals in VR headset market, and its latest model, Quest 3, also superimposes digital content into real environments, but can do so at a far lower price of $500.
