The last outgoing Notre Dame player in the transfer portal has found a new home. More than six months after entering the portal on Dec. 4, former Irish safety Antonio Carter II committed to Jacksonville State on Monday.

Carter has one season of eligibility remaining.

Carter transferred to Notre Dame in May 2023 as graduate student from Rhode Island. After four seasons with the Rams, Carter committed to Notre Dame over portal offers from Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Iowa, Washington, Wisconsin, Ole Miss and others.

In his one season with the Irish, Carter appeared in 8 games. He had 8 tackles (7 solo) and 1 forced fumble. He saw 72 defensive snaps at safety, most notably being ejected for targeting in Week 1 against Tennessee State. Carter was also a special teams contributor, primarily on kick coverage

Before transferring to Notre Dame, Carter primarily occupied the outside cornerback position for Rhode Island. He appeared in 21 games in his last two seasons with the Rams, recording 105 tackles (73 solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 17 pass breakups. In the turnover department, he had an interception, 3 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.

In its first year at the FBS level, Jacksonville State went 9-4 under head coach Rich Rodriguez. The former West Virginia, Michigan and Arizona head coach led the Gamecocks to a 6-2 finish in Conference USA play.

Jacksonville State completed its transition from FCS to FBS in 2023, meaning the Gamecocks were not eligible for postseason play last year, but they will be this year. Carter will have a chance to compete for a C-USA title.

The defending C-USA champion, Liberty, would have made the 12-team college football playoff it existed last season.

With Carter joining Jacksonville State, all 18 outgoing Notre Dame transfers have committed to new teams. Here’s the full list, from Carter to wide receiver Chris Tyree.
