Love Island contestants are given strict rules around smoking and vaping. In 2018, a ban was placed on the dating show after more than half of the show’s Ofcom complaints were based on smoking.
Although Love Island stars are allowed to smoke during their time in the villa, they must disclose the habit before entering as a bombshell, as revealed by experts at Go Smoke Free.
Love Island stars have smoking limit
Love Island contestants were given up to 20 cigarettes per day until 2017. This led to criticism over ‘glamorizing’ smoking, with a study revealing cigarettes appeared on screen every five minutes.
An Ofcom information request from 2023 reveals Love Island was the third most complained about TV show under the category ‘Drugs, smoking, solvents or alcohol’ from January 2014 to November 2023.
Now, they are allowed a vape or up to 10 cigarettes a day, which cannot be brought into the villa. Only one contestant can smoke at a time, preventing group conversations from happening off-camera.
Separate areas to go for smokers
There is a designated smoking area where only one person can smoke at a time. Amy Hart revealed in a TikTok video how they had to smoke alone in a monitored area at the front of the villa.
When the ban was announced in 2018, Angela Jain, Managing Director of ITV Studios, told Radio Times, “We are treating it like smoking in a workplace and created a clear separate area at the front of the villa.”
Love Island All Stars contestants, Hannah Elizabeth and Liberty Poole, revealed in a KISS FRESH interview that many islanders vaped and often argued over who could use the smoking area first.
Islanders must disclose the habit
Love Island stars can’t smoke unless they disclose the habit before entering the villa. Season nine’s Olivia and Maxwell said in an interview with KISS FRESH how undisclosed smokers are not allowed to smoke.
During a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, Laura Anderson from season four disclosed that producers provided “five for social smokers, 10 if daily smoker,” adding that you can’t go above the limit.
