The far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which is critical of the European Union, has been confirmed the winner of the European elections in the Alpine nation with 25.4% of the vote.
According to the final result, which was available after all postal votes were counted on Monday, the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), which holds the chancellorship, came in a close second with 24.5%.
The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) received 23.2% of the vote.
The Greens, who govern Austria together with the ÖVP, received around 11.1% on Sunday, while the liberal Neos received 10.1%.
On Sunday, the FPÖ won the most votes in a nationwide election in Austria for the first time. The ballot was seen as a test for the Austrian parliamentary elections in the autumn.
The FPÖ won three additional seats and will send six lawmakers to the newly composed European Parliament. The ÖVP parliamentary group lost two seats and will in future only be represented by five lawmakers - the same number as the SPÖ. The Greens and Neos secured two seats each.
A total of 6.37 million people in Austria were eligible to vote in the EU elections. Of these, 56.3% took part in the vote.
