Wes Johnson calls for ‘all hands on deck’ for potential Georgia rally vs. NC State

Georgia and Wes Johnson were not shy about mixing and matching pitchers in Game 3 against NC State. After Zach Harris went the first three innings, Kolten Smith stepped in the fourth.

However it gets done will do just fine for Johnson. But Georgia found itself in a 4-2 hole going to the bottom of the fourth.

The Bulldogs and Johnson were initially elated after a two-run home run in the first by Tre Phelps to get the early lead.

“We got all hands on deck so we’re gonna start matches some things up and go from there,” Johnson said on the ESPN broadcast.

Johnson is used to big moments. He won a national title as the pitching coach for LSU last year.

“I think the biggest thing is is you know, you’re gonna play in a lot of games like we kind of got flowing right now,” Johnson said. “They’re gonna be tight, emotions are going to be high and you just have to stay calm, not hit the panic button and just keep playing. I think those are some things I took away from last year

“We’re really excited, our fans have been phenomenal, you know, and they’ve come out and our guys love it and it’s just a great credit to them.”

For the first time since 2008, Georgia got to play in the NCAA Tournament Super Regionals. On Friday, Johnson revealed what reaching the Men’s College World Series would mean to the program.

“The first thing we want to talk about is tomorrow,” Johnson said, “but yes. I’d be naive not to say yeah, if we got there and we win that second game — for these guys, especially this group. You look at Charlie Condon, you look at Corey Collins, Fernando Gonzalez. I mean, I could go through all the guys that have been here a while. It would mean the world to them, right?”

Johnson couldn’t be prouder of his team.

“I heard the term so many times when I got here about rebuild, rebuild, rebuild. You just know that you don’t have to rebuild,” Johnson said. “You can go out and if you do your due diligence and run your models and everything else, you can find a team that can win in your ballpark.”
