NC State defeated Georgia 8-5 to win the Athens Super Regional, securing the eighth and final spot in the 2024 Men’s College World Series.

While it didn’t end up being their day, Georgia was the first to find the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning after Bulldogs slugger Tre Phelps homered off NC State’s Logan Whitaker to score the first two runs of the game.

However, that was all that that Georgia was able to muster until the sixth inning. In the meantime, NC State was able to tie the game in the top of the next inning s Garrett Pennington matched Phelps’ bomb and scored a two-run shot of his own.

NC State would go on to score two more runs in the fourth inning to double their lead after Matt Heavner scored from third base on a passed ball. Alec Makarewicz followed that up with an RBI single to left field a couple of at-bats later.

Eli Serrano III added to the lead in the top of the sixth with a home run of his own to push the score up to 5-2 in the Wolfpack’s favor.

Georgia would find its bats in the bottom of the sixth inning, after finding a few runners on base. Fernando Gonzalez flied out to right field to help the Bulldogs bring the lead to within two runs, but NC State was ready in the top of the seventh to match that effort as Alex Sosa re-insured the lead back to three runs with a towering solo bomb to right field.

The Bulldogs wouldn’t falter, however, as they were able to bring a run home in the seventh to bring the score back to within two runs. NC State and Georgia continued to trade runs into the ninth, including UGA star Charlie Condon launching one final home run of his storied college career before he goes to on to be a first-round pick in the upcoming MLB Draft.

Before game three, the series had been an interesting one to sat the least. NC State shocked the Bulldogs Game 1 having defeated Georgia 18-1 after an 11-run second inning for the Wolfpack on Saturday. Sunday would prove to to be all Georgia, however, as the Bulldogs would tie the series with a lopsided 11-2 win.

Now, they’ll move on to face Kentucky in the first round of the 2024 Men’s College World Series. The first pitch is scheduled for Saturday, June 15 at 2 p.m. ET and will air live on ESPN.
