Fabrizio Romano shares new update on Levi Colwill leaving Chelsea after claims Liverpool are trying to sign him

Liverpool look set to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

The Reds had some trouble at the back throughout Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign in charge.

With Ibrahima Konate struggling for fitness and form and Joel Matip’s Liverpool career now history, Arne Slot will want to address his defence.

In truth, the Liverpool owners attempted to do the same thing last year. Back then, Chelsea defender Levi Colwill emerged as a genuine target for the Reds.

Fast forward the clock 12 months, and there have been claims that Colwill is firmly on the radar at Anfield once again.

Fabrizio Romano delivers Levi Colwill update

Colwill has always felt like a difficult player for Liverpool to bring on board. Although he fell out of favour towards the end of last season, Chelsea have never wanted to lose their academy graduate.

Nevertheless, Colwill is reportedly a boyhood Liverpool fan and the Reds have continued to persist in their interest of him.

Only last week it was reported that Liverpool have made it known that they’d love to sign Colwill as he prepares for showdown talks with new manager Enzo Maresca.

Other centre-backs have been mentioned in connection with the Reds, but seems to be a feeling that Colwill is the one they really want.

And as Chelsea begin life under yet another head coach, journalist Fabrizio Romano has taken to X to share the Blues’ position on the 21-year-old.

“Understand Chelsea position on Levi Colwill remains same as last summer: no plans to sell him,” says the transfer expert.

“Despite interest from several top clubs, Colwill is again considered important part of CFC project and a key player for their future.”

Could Liverpool really sign Levi Colwill?

As Romano reports, getting Colwill out of Chelsea would seem like a difficult task this summer.

The Reds ran into a brick wall when trying to sign the England international last year and his future felt even more uncertain back then.

In the time since that pursuit ultimately failed, Colwill has signed a new deal at Stamford Bridge.

And like many other members of Maresca’s team, the centre-back is tied down for a long while yet. Colwill’s contract runs until 2029 with the option of a year’s extension.

As a result, we don’t think it’s worthwhile for Liverpool to pursue the defender any further. Chelsea perhaps do need to sell players again this summer, but it seems highly unlikely that Colwill will be the one departing.

Never say never of course, but we’d strongly urge Liverpool to not waste any more of their time with this one.
