Ukraine has completed all the steps outlined by the European Commission. The European Union should begin negotiations with the country regarding integration in June, citing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the opening ceremony of the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2024.

"Ukraine has completed all the steps we outlined, the steps we formulated. Therefore, we believe that the European Union should start accession negotiations by the end of this month," said the European Commission President.

She concluded by adding that the EU is a home for both Kharkiv and Ukraine as a whole.

Ukraine's path to EU membership

Kyiv submitted its application for EU membership at the end of February 2022, following the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation. By June of that year, the European Commission presented its conclusions on the application, and the member states of the bloc granted Ukraine candidate status for EU membership.

On June 7, 2024, the European Commission called on the EU to begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova.
