Apple has taken the wraps off its forthcoming iOS 18 mobile operating system. Set to launch this autumn, iOS 18 will be featured on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro.
With artificial intelligence (AI) and customization at its core, it offers significant advancements over previous versions of iOS.
Apple’s AI implementation, dubbed Apple Intelligence, is “deeply integrated into iOS 18,” according to the company.
This new feature will utilize ChatGPT’s capabilities to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across apps, create images, and compile memories in the Photos app based on user descriptions.
Additionally, photo editing will become more intuitive, and Siri will benefit from enhanced AI to become more “natural, contextually relevant, and personal.”
Elon Musk has raised privacy concerns
Apple claims that Apple Intelligence is “built with privacy from the ground up,” ensuring that data sent to the cloud for processing remains secure. However, some industry figures, such as Elon Musk, have expressed concerns.
Musk has threatened to ban Apple devices from his companies if OpenAI (which develops ChatGPT) is integrated at the system level, citing security fears. “That is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk tweeted.

Customization and messaging enhancements
iOS 18 will bring new ways to customize the iPhone experience. Users will be able to arrange apps freely, including leaving gaps between them and placing them directly above the dock. App icons can be resized and tinted for a darker appearance.
iMessage will also see significant updates, allowing users to schedule messages for later, add text formatting such as bold and italics, and support the RCS standard for larger capacity and better reliability when messaging non-iOS users.
Additionally, satellite messaging will be available for iPhone 14 and later models, ensuring communication in areas without mobile reception.
New features for gaming and AirPods
The iPhone 16 will introduce Game Mode, a feature that debuted on Apple’s Mac computers last year. Game Mode minimizes background activity to maximize frame rates and improve responsiveness with AirPods and game controllers, providing a competitive edge for gamers.
Siri Interactions will enable users to nod or shake their heads to accept or decline Siri announcements. For instance, users can shake their heads to reject an incoming call during a workout.
Voice Isolation is also coming to AirPods Pro, using advanced computational audio to ensure the caller’s voice remains clear in loud or windy environments. Other updates promise to reduce AirPods’ latency and add Personalized Spatial Audio for a more immersive gaming experience.
Apple Music and SharePlay
Apple Music’s SharePlay feature will allow multiple listeners to share control of what’s playing, enhancing the collaborative listening experience.
This feature is designed to make group listening sessions more enjoyable, provided everyone can agree on the music selection.
