Austrians will go to the polls to elect a new parliament on September 29, the Federal Chancellery in Vienna announced on Tuesday.

The date still has to be formally agreed by the council of ministers, or Cabinet, and parliament.

The last election took place in 2019. Since then, Chancellor Karl Nehammer's conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) has governed in a coalition with the Greens.

The far-right Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) is currently considered the favourite for the autumn elections. It won the European Parliament elections on Sunday with 25.4% of the vote, closely followed by the ÖVP and the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ).
