£102m midfielder and 'diamond' wonderkid: One player Liverpool should sign from every Euro 2024 squad - opinion

The preparations are almost complete for Euro 2024 as Liverpool and club football takes a back seat.

The Reds have ten players featuring over in Germany, and they’ll all have their eyes on success in the tournament.

From Arne Slot’s point of view, it will be an interesting first glimpse into what he can expect from his new Liverpool squad.

And although Reds fans will no doubt be cheering on their Anfield heroes, they’ll also be keen to see the other talent on display in Germany.

It is the transfer window after all, and with that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of one player from every Euro 2024 squad who should really be on Liverpool’s radar.

Group A

Germany – Florian Wirtz (21, Bayer Leverkusen): The hosts have a number of interesting players to cast an eye over. But our pick is Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz. Wirtz has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool and is one of Europe’s most exciting attacking prospects.

Scotland – Angus Gunn (28, Norwich City): Led by Andy Robertson, Scotland’s squad is not the most exciting in Europe. As a result, we’ve gone for Norwich goalie Angus Gunn as our choice. The Reds need a new back-up goalie and Gunn would be a reliable choice.

Hungary – Milos Kerkez (20, Bournemouth): Hungary could be one of the tournament’s dark horses having been on an excellent unbeaten run through qualifying. A big part of that run has been left-back Milos Kerkez who we think would be a perfect successor to Robertson for Liverpool.

Switzerland – Leonidas Stergiou (22, Stuttgart): Liverpool need a new centre-back and having done so well at Bundesliga runners-up Stuttgart last season, Leonidas Stergiou is well worth taking a closer look at.

Group B

Spain – Nico Williams (21, Athletic Bilbao): As Liverpool gear up to make an attacking signing this season, Nico Williams has reportedly been on their radar. Pacy, direct and with an eye for goal, the 21-year-old looks well suited to playing at Anfield.

Croatia – Luka Sucic (21, RB Salzburg): With the Reds searching for midfield signings last summer, Luka Sucic was linked with moving to Merseyside. A tall, physically imposing box-to-box midfielder, Sucic could well still be in Liverpool’s thoughts.

Italy – Riccardo Calafiori (22, Bologna): Centre-back is reportedly top of Liverpool’s priorities this summer and a left-footed on is what they seem to what. Consequently, they should look no further than Riccardo Calafiori who had an outstanding season with Bologna. Unfortunately, Calafiori looks bound for Juventus.

Albania – Mario Mitaj (20, Lokomotiv Moscow): With left-back a long-term need for Liverpool, Mario Mitaj could be one who is already on their radar. Already a 12-cap international with over 80 games under his belt with Lokomotiv and AEK Athens, Mitaj is a star of the future at full-back.

Group C

Slovenia – Benjamin Sesko (21, RB Leipzig): Benjamin Sesko had looked likely to be heading to one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals this summer. But having decided to stay at RB Leipzig, the 21-year-old could be one to watch for the Reds next year. They’ve watched Sesko before.

Denmark – Kasper Schmeichel (37, Anderlecht): Okay, this is not excitedly a pulse-racer, but Liverpool could need a new second and third choice ‘keeper this summer. Kasper Schmeichel would be a perfect replacement for Adrian.

Serbia – Strahinja Pavlovic (23, RB Salzburg): Another left-footed centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic is one of the most imposing defenders you’ll ever see. With almost 160 senior appearances, Pavlovic looks primed to make the next step from Pep Lijnders’ Salzburg.

England – Adam Wharton (20, Crystal Palace): Liverpool were linked with Adam Wharton ahead of the January transfer window. After he joined Crystal Palace and excelled, they must have been kicking themselves for missing out on him. Looks destined to be a star in midfield.

Group D

Poland – Nicola Zalewski (22, Roma): It takes a special player to catch Jose Mourinho’s eye, but that’s exactly what Nicola Zalewski did at Roma. A versatile forward who is also capable of playing as a wing-back, Zalewski has potential to be an exciting option up and down the right.

Netherlands – Lutsharel Geertruida (23, Feyenoord): As Slot takes over at Liverpool, a handful of his former Feyenoord players have been linked. None more so than Lutsharel Geertruida, who would be a great option for Liverpool at centre-back or left-back.

Austria – Nicolas Seiwald (23, RB Salzburg): Another of Lijnders’ new players to make our list, defensive midfielder Nicolas Seiwald looks set to start for Austria in Germany. As Liverpool look for a long-term No.6, he’s one to be mindful of.

France – Warren Zaire-Emery (18, PSG): France’s squad is littered with start names. But one who is just coming onto the scene is teenager Warren Zaire-Emery. He’s already been described as a ‘diamond’ by manager Luis Enrique [GFFN] and already looks unattainable, but would be one heck of a signing for Liverpool.

Group E

Belgium – Johan Bakayoko (21, PSV Eindhoven): Perhaps the easiest pick of the lot, Johan Bakayoko is a bona fide Liverpool target this summer. Reds fans should be watching his every move.

Slovakia – Leo Sauer (18, Feyenoord): Slot has been renowned for working with young players during his time with Feyenoord and Leo Sauer was one who saw the benefit of that. The 18-year-old winger played 15 times under Liverpool’s new head coach last season, scoring two goals. Looks a talent.

Romania – Horatiu Moldovan (26, Atletico Madrid): With the Romania squad not jam-packed full of options, Moldovan looks like an interesting option at goalkeeper. Having signed for Atletico Madrid as back-up to Jan Oblak in January, the 26-year-old obviously has a bit of something.

Ukraine – Georgiy Sudakov (21, Shakhtar Donetsk): Liverpool were said to be close to signing Georgiy Sudakov last summer. The silky Shakhtar midfielder looks set to go for a massive fee this year. Liverpool would be wise to get involved.

Group F

Turkey – Orkun Kokcu (23, Benfica): Orkun Kokcu was another played said to be close to joining Liverpool 12 months ago. Having done so well under Slot previously, the attacking midfielder could yet be reunited with his former coach.

Georgia – Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (23, Napoli): Another easy pick, we think that Khvicha Kvaratskehlia would be the perfect attacking signing for Liverpool this summer. It’s unlikely to happen of course, but the Reds should try anything they can to bring ‘Kvaradona’ in.

Portugal – Joao Neves (19, Benfica): The second Benfica player in this group and another simple choice. Diogo Jota has labelled Joao Neves as a superstar in the making and Liverpool have been credited with an interest.

Czech Republic – Adam Hlozek (21, Bayer Leverkusen): Now 21, Adam Hlozek’s magnificent potential has not yet been reached at Bayer Leverkusen. Still, the striker was part of Xabi Alonso’s amazing team last season and is young enough that he could still kick on another few rungs.
