Kevin Harvick: ‘This might be one of the biggest F-Ups in the whole year’

Kevin Harvick is sounding off on a big issue he has with Iowa Speedway ahead of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race. On hisHappy Hour podcast, Harvick talked about how he enjoyed battling Joey Lagano at the racetrack during an East-West race in 2007-2008. However, the retired NASCAR driver has an issue with the repave.

“Who in the world decided to repave this racetrack?” Harvick asked. “You had to run one with the old asphalt. They repaved the racetrack from the middle of the racetrack down. If you’re going to repave it, repave the whole corner because now you’ve got half a racetrack.”

Harvick continued: “I know that IndyCar had been there. But this might be of the biggest F-ups in the whole year. It is one of the biggest mess ups that we could possibly have this year. When I saw the pictures from the tire test of the racetrack being repaved, every driver in that field was looking forward to being able to run anywhere on the racetrack, and now you have half the racetrack.

“I’m not sure who made that decision to repave the racetrack like that, and I’m sure there are was a scenario that says oh the asphalt was sliding or this or that. I had to put some big ass patches somewhere and at least got through once race with the way that the asphalt was.”

Harvick went on to say that it wasn’t advertised for a reason and “one of the biggest mistakes” they could have made to a racetrack. He was then asked how drivers approach Iowa Speedway since it will be the first Cup Series Race at the racetrack.

“They did the tire test there, so they’ll have all the wheel force testing and all the test data from each car that ran for those manufacturers,” he said. …Hopefully there’s something that comes out of this that is not just the typical repave race because Iowa Speedway is one of the coolest racetracks that would could possibly have.

“Hopefully that progresses into at least two lanes because you’re not using the third lane. The third lane is impossible, not even close to being able to be utilized because of the old asphalt. Now you take all that progressive banking and everything that made Iowa great and you take it right out the picture.”

Iowa Speedway hosted Xfinity Series and Truck Series races from 2009 to 2019. This year’s Cup Series race will start on Sunday at 7 p.m. ET and air on the USA Network.
