'You guys are amazing': 'Unorthodox' free agent says emotional goodbye as Wrexham join race to sign him

Wrexham are in the market for a goalkeeper this summer as the club attempt to pull off a coup with the signing of Arthur Okonkwo.

Wrexham started last season with Ben Foster in goal as the veteran continued his fairytale return to the STōK Cae Ras.

Foster was leaking goals to start the season though and decided to retire – for the second time – just weeks into the campaign.

That left Wrexham scrambling; Mark Howard came into the side but Phil Parkinson wanted another stopper.

In came Arthur Okonkwo on loan from Arsenal, producing a superb season to help Wrexham win promotion to League One.

Okonkwo is now leaving Arsenal this summer with his contract coming to an end, raising hopes of a permanent move to the STōK Cae Ras.

Marko Marosi says goodbye

Rob McElhenney has admitted in recent days that Wrexham are talking to Okonkwo and ‘know he wants to come back’ to the club.

Fans are excited about a potential deal but Wrexham do need to have some other options in mind, just in case Okonkwo ends up elsewhere.

One interesting target has now emerged with reports linking Shrewsbury Town stopper Marko Marosi towards Wrexham.

Rotherham United are thought to be leading the race for Marosi, viewing him as a replacement for Viktor Johansson.

Wrexham remain interested but will seemingly face major competition for Marosi’s signature this summer.

Moving to Wrexham may not go down well with Shrewsbury fans and the goalkeeper has now sent a message to supporters having confirmed his exit.

Marosi is out of contract this summer and has announced that his ‘time at Shrewsbury Town has come to an end’.

Posting on social media, Marosi praised the fans, staff and players at Shrewsbury after spending three years at the club.

Marosi loved his time at Shrewsbury and his connection with their fans may just leave him second-guessing a potential move to Wrexham given the rivalry between the two sides.

‘Salopians my time at Shrewsbury Town has come to an end,’ said Marosi. ‘We have shared some great times together, especially in the second year at the club where we achieved the second highest finish in the club’s history.’

‘Last season was was very up and down and really tough at times but you guys always struck by us no matter what and the whole team appreciated it.’

‘The highlight for me was being voted players’ player of the season, which is hard to put into what that meant to me and I want to thank all my team mates for that.’

‘I want to thank the club for bringing me in and letting me be part of its history. I want to thank the managers and all of the staff not just the football side but behind the scenes as well. And lastly I want to thank the fans, for all the love and support you have shown me over the three years, you guys are amazing.’

Who is Wrexham target Marosi?

Marosi hails from Slovakia and started his career in non-league football with Barnoldswick Town.

The 6ft 4in stopper was spotted and picked up by Wigan Athletic but never made an appearance for the club before leaving for Doncaster Rovers in 2014.

Five seasons with Doncaster was followed up by two years with Coventry City, where he was described as an ‘unorthodox’ goalkeeper by coach Aled Williams.

Marosi played 61 times for the Sky Blues before joining Shrewsbury, returning to League One.

Most of Marosi’s football has come at League One level and Wrexham may view him as a proven option at this level.

That is a completely different profile to Okonkwo but would be another free transfer move to strengthen Phil Parkinson’s squad – if he is willing to make a somewhat controversial move.
