‘Expected to leave’: Fabrizio Romano claims Wrexham and Birmingham City lead race for Premier League talent

Wrexham are chasing signings after promotion to League One and fans are left waiting for the first addition of the summer transfer window.

Phil Parkinson has guided Wrexham to back-to-back promotions and fans are looking forward to life in the third tier.

Wrexham have been on quite the ride under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds and preparing for League One life is something few could have predicted just a few years ago.

Having not been at this level for nearly 20 years, Wrexham are in need of major reinforcements.

Blazing through League Two was one thing but Wrexham will now be going up against recent Premier League clubs such as Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town.

McElhenney and Reynolds must back Reynolds with major signings this summer and one target could be viewed as a major coup.

Wrexham battling for Marc Leonard

Reports in May suggested that Wrexham had joined the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Marc Leonard.

The Scottish talent has spent the last two seasons on loan at Northampton Town and certainly impressed for the Cobblers.

Now back with Brighton, Leonard is expected to move on permanently – and Wrexham are right in the mix for his signature.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has now offered an update, taking to social media to discuss Leonard’s future.

Romano claims that Wrexham are leading the race for Leonard’s signature alongside two other clubs – Birmingham City and Oxford United.

Oxford have just won promotion to the Championship whereas Birmingham are now preparing for life in League One alongside Wrexham.

Romano believes that a deal for Leonard would cost around £300,000 plus add-ons, meaning Wrexham could actually set a new club transfer record this summer.

Wrexham’s record stands at the £300,000 paid for Ollie Palmer in January 2022, paying up to land a proven striker during the hunt for promotion.

Leonard would be slightly different; a promising young talent who could be a smart investment for the future.

Cardiff City in the mix

Romano’s post doesn’t mention Cardiff City, but the Championship side are thought to be interested.

Sky Sports claim that Cardiff are keen, potentially offering him a move to the Championship – just like Oxford.

Battling with Championship sides won’t be easy for Wrexham, but the pulling power of the McElhenney and Reynolds project is huge.

Leonard may well fancy being a part of that, especially if Wrexham can convince him that he will play a vital role at the STōK Cae Ras rather than just being a squad player.

Settling down and starring on a weekly basis should be the priority for Leonard after two years out on loan and Wrexham can offer that.

The former Rangers talent has plenty to think about this summer and Wrexham will hope to come out on top, especially against a side like Birmingham.
