The Oklahoma women’s basketball staff hired a new member a few weeks back, tapping Jonas Chatterton as the associate head coach.
Chatterton comes to Oklahoma by way of Oregon State, where he spent the past 10 seasons as the associate head coach. He helped guide the Beavers to one of the most successful stints in program history, reaching the 2016 Final Four and the 2024 Elite Eight.
Head coach Jennie Baranczyk raved about her new hire.
“Jonas and I worked together at Colorado and have stayed in touch for a number of years,” Baranczyk said. “And he’s just, he’s really good, he has a great basketball mind and yet he also does a great job recruiting. He’s very experienced. He’ll be a head coach someday. I don’t know how long we’ll get to have him here, but we’ll take him as long as he’s willing.”
Jonas Chatterton was an assistant coach at Colorado for three seasons before he was elevated to an associate head coach there in 2013. In his first two seasons with the Buffaloes he teamed up with Baranczyk, who was an assistant coach under Linda Lappe at the time.
Eventually, Chatterton helped Colorado escape the WNIT and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2004.
Now he’ll join an Oklahoma program looking for a bit more continuity and progress under Baranczyk. The team has reached the NCAA Tournament each of the past three years, advancing to the second round in two of the three years, including this past season.
The goal is to make deeper runs, of course.
“He is excited about the potential of our team as well, so that was a huge part for him,” Baranczyk said. “Excited to go into the SEC. That was a huge reason that he wanted to come here as well. But he just has, he’s got great energy, he’s really good on court.”
There’s another element to Jonas Chatterton’s hire. He might unlock some new untapped potential for the Sooners.
“People are going to really like him here and he has both national and international recruiting ties, which will be really good for us, too, to continue to elevate our recruiting reach,” Baranczyk said.
