Musk drops lawsuit against ChatGPT maker OpenAI

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has dropped his lawsuit against OpenAI ahead of a hearing scheduled for Wednesday over the ChatGPT maker's request to dismiss the case.

Musk - who owns the US electric carmaker Tesla and co-founded OpenAI in 2015 - sued the artificial intelligence startup in February claiming OpenAI was no longer a non-profit company with tech giant Microsoft now the main beneficiary of the firm's artificial intelligence technology.

According to Musk, this development violated OpenAI's initial mission statement.

OpenAI has dismissed the claims, saying there had never been any formal agreement of the kind.

No reasons were given by Musk's lawyers for his decision to drop the case, according to court documents released on Tuesday.

OpenAI co-founders also levelled their own accusations against Musk, claiming in a March blog post that he had sought "full control" over the company and the chief executive position.

In the post, which includes emails from Musk from his time at OpenAI, they also said that Musk wanted OpenAI to "merge with Tesla" in 2018.

The tech billionaire has so far not commented on OpenAI's version of events.

OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, which can be prompted to produce text using generative AI, fuelled the hype surrounding artificial intelligence over a year ago.
