Leeds United defender shines in national team's 4-0 last night after playing in an unusual position

A whole host of Leeds United stars are currently in action for their countries and one starred in a 4-0 win overnight for his Nation, even playing in a new role as an attacking midfielder.

Many of the Leeds players are preparing for Euro 2024, with Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch, Liam Cooper and Max Wober all picked by their countries ahead of the tournament which starts on Friday in Germany.

Others are in action in the Americas, with Copa America incoming and even 2026 World Cup qualifiers next up. Brenden Aaronson is due to return to Elland Road and he faces Brazil with the USA this week.

Another is left-back Junior Firpo, who has chosen to represent the Dominican Republic ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. The former Barcelona man enjoyed a brilliant second half to the campaign.

Junior Firpo impresses in new role as Dominican Republic win 4-0

Firpo laid on eight assists after being one of the players to break back into the Leeds side in January alongside the likes of Ilia Gruev, Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford after missing most of the first half.

An excellent streak of form that also saw Firpo lay on an assist in the 4-0 play-off semi-final win over Norwich. Now, Firpo’s future at Leeds is in doubt with his Elland Road contract set to expire in 2025.

But Firpo’s focus right now will be on representing the Dominican Republic and overnight, he helped his side beat The British Virgin Islands 4-0 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier and even played in a new role.

Firpo used as one of two no.10’s in attacking 3-4-2-1 system

A formation used by Antonio Conte at Chelsea, the Dominican Republic looked to press home what was expected to be an easy win over the Virgin Islands by lining up in an attacking system during the night.

Firpo was used on the right of the two players in behind the striker. While he did not get his name on the scoresheet despite his country having 26 attempts on goal, Firpo did lay on a late assist for the fourth.

The Dominican Republic went 3-0 up inside the first half, Rafa Nunez scoring twice and a penalty from Donny Romero. Then in injury time, Firpo slid in a right-footed pass into Romero to make it 4-0.

After losing to Jamaica in the opening group game, Firpo’s nation sit in third in a five-country group that also includes Dominica and Guatemala. Next up for Firpo, is the Olympics in Paris this summer.
