'I did think' = Paul Scholes immediately sends clear-cut message after Ineos make decision over Erik ten Hag's future at Man Utd

Paul Scholes has reacted to the news that Erik ten Hag is expected to remain as Manchester United manager after the Premier League club’s season review.

Erik ten Hag’s future was plunged into doubt in recent months and the Manchester United manager was believed to be on the chopping block at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman oversaw an up-and-down 2023-24 season at United, with the Red Devils finishing in eighth place in the Premier League table.

Despite missing out on the top four and Champions League football, Ten Hag was able to salvage United’s season with the club’s FA Cup triumph.

United produced a stunning performance in the FA Cup final in May and secured a sensational 2-1 win over Manchester City at Wembley.

The Red Devils’ FA Cup triumph ensured United European football for next season, with the Red Devils now set to play in the Europa League.

Scholes’ reaction to Ten Hag and Man Utd news

Erik ten Hag is under contract with Manchester United until 2025, but the Dutchman has been forced to wait for a clear message about his future at the club.

United launched a season review after the FA Cup final and were linked with several managers, including Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Gareth Southgate.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Tuesday reported that United boss Ten Hag is set to stay at the Premier League club for the 2024-25 season.

Fabrizio Romano on X, formerly known as Twitter, revealed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos team had “informed” Ten Hag about their “final decision.”

It is now believed that United will open talks over a new contract with Ten Hag, who arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 after he left Ajax.

Paul Scholes took to Instagram Stories and welcomed the decision by Ineos to offer the club a “bit of continuity,” despite the need for “major improvements” at United.

“Nice to wake up to this news although I did think [Palace] away felt like the end,” he said.

“Major improvements needed but at least we have a bit of continuity and don’t have to wait for a new regime to settle in.

“Fans have given him and the players incredible support and deserve better next season. Bye.”

Rio Ferdinand felt Ten Hag’s time was over

United legend Rio Ferdinand had previously admitted that he felt the writing was on the wall for Ten Hag ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The 45-year-old TNT Sports pundit was far from convinced that winning the FA Cup trophy would change the feelings Ineos had on United’s season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel in May, Rio Ferdinand said: “The more and more I think about it, win or lose, I don’t think Ten Hag will be there come next season.

“I’m not saying that’s what I want, I’m just saying what I believe is going to happen, and I believe that the club are going to look elsewhere, I think.

“I don’t think [winning the FA Cup] changes anything in the eyes of Ineos. I’ve not spoken to anyone there, this is just an assumption, this is what I think.”
