Iraq Made It Six Out of Six as Vietnam’s World Cup Dreams Lie in Tatters

Iraq concluded their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying second round with a flawless performance, defeating Vietnam 3-1 on Tuesday at the Basra International Stadium to maintain a perfect record in Group F. This impressive run strengthens the Lions of Mesopotamia's ambition to secure a second-ever appearance at the World Cup proper.

In contrast, Vietnam’s campaign ended on a disappointing note as they finished third in Group F, with regional rivals Indonesia claiming the group's second and last ticket to the qualifying third round.

Iraq started energetically in Basra, putting Vietnam under relentless pressure from the outset. They took an early lead in the 12th minute when Hussein Ali Haidar unleashed a spectacular long-range strike that swerved past Vietnam goalkeeper Filip Nguyen.

Vietnam’s situation worsened in the 17th minute after a reckless challenge by Filip resulted in a penalty, but Mohanad Ali failed to capitalize, missing the target.

Kim Sang-sik's men, relying on counter-attacks, had their best chance through Nguyen Tien Linh, whose long-range shot went wide. Both teams missed opportunities late in the first half, with Vu Van Thanh failing to score from inside the box and Ali’s glancing header forcing a fine save from Filip.

Iraq sustained their attacking momentum into the second half. Ali came close in the 50th minute, and substitute Ibraheem Bayesh squandered a close-range chance from Ali’s cross.

Vietnam nearly reduced the deficit in the 61st minute when substitute Do Hung Dung’s curling free-kick narrowly missed the right post.

However, Iraq continued to create the better opportunities and extended their lead in the 71st minute. Ali Jasim found space at the edge of the box and his deflected shot nestled into the net.

Vietnam managed a consolation goal in the 85th minute when Pham Tuan Hai capitalized on a defensive lapse to volley past Iraq’s keeper Jalal Hassan. Nonetheless, Iraq sealed their victory in added time with a third goal from Aymen Hussein, wrapping up their qualifying campaign on a high note with six wins out of six and only two goals conceded.
