'Some fans asking me': Fabrizio Romano responds to questions about £21m Euro 2024 player joining Liverpool

Liverpool are yet to make any concrete moves in the transfer market this summer.

Although the window is not yet officially open until Friday, by now fans might have expected some more substantial activity.

By this time last year, for example, Liverpool had already secured and announced the signing of Alexis Mac Allister. 12 months on and things are decidedly quieter at Anfield.

That is no great surprise. The presence of both Euro 2024 and the Copa America this summer have the potential to put a spanner in early transfer business.

Nevertheless, that does not mean that plans are not being put in place to add to the Liverpool squad. The Reds could even reportedly be targeting a player or two who could feature in the upcoming international tournaments.

Fabrizio Romano responds to Justin Bijlow rumours

Liverpool have several needs to address in this year’s summer window. First of all, a centre-back should be a priority.

Secondly, Liverpool look likely to add another wide forward to the options already available to Arne Slot.

Another midfielder – ideally a defensive minded one – would also be on the shopping list of many fans. That is also reportedly on Liverpool’s minds, too.

Finally, it seems likely that the Reds will need to pick up a new back-up goalkeeper as well. Caoimhin Kelleher has publicly expressed a desire to leave and if he does, a replacement will be required.

With that in mind, Liverpool have been linked with Feyenoord stopper Justin Bijlow. And taking to his Daily Briefing column on Wednesday morning, journalist Fabrizio Romano weighed in on those rumours.

“Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow continues to attract speculation, with some fans asking me about recent stories involving Arsenal and Liverpool,” Romano reports.

“They are perhaps two clubs who could do with a new backup goalkeeper, particularly Arsenal as it looks like Aaron Ramsdale will have a good chance of leaving this summer,” he adds.

“Still, I don’t have something concrete yet on this, nothing in terms of talks or concrete negotiations. Bijlow was Man United’s plan B to Onana last summer, but it didn’t work out at that time, so let’s see if Premier League clubs will arrive this summer.”

Liverpool like the look of Justin Bijlow

Bijlow would be an interesting option to replace Kelleher. One year older than the Irishman, he’s also far more experienced.

Although he’s actually been the nominated number one for Feyenoord – and for Slot – injuries have disrupted his progress over the past few years.

Despite that, Bijlow has obvious qualities. As Romano says, he almost joined United for a fee The Athletic quote as being £21.2m.

Having been called up to the Netherlands’ squad for Euro 2024, Liverpool fans might get the chance to see why over the next month.

It seems as though the Feyenoord man will not be Ronaldo Koeman’s No.1 in Germany, though. Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen has jumped ahead of Bijlow.

Regardless of that, Reds fans should be keeping an eye on the 26-year-old. Bijlow has already commented on interest from Liverpool and it sounds like he’d be open to the move.
