‘All due respect’: David Croft admits zero-win driver has ‘proved’ he doesn’t deserve a 2025 F1 contract

The Canadian Grand Prix was a treacherous race and a quarter of the grid didn’t reach the chequered flag.

That wasn’t necessarily the fault of each driver who retired, with Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc proving to be very unlucky in Montreal for very different reasons.

However, other drivers made critical errors that not only ended their races but impacted the entire event.

Sergio Perez was penalised for driving back to the pit lane with a severely damaged rear wing after spinning into the barriers and ending what was a miserable weekend.

Carlos Sainz was the guilty party towards the end of the race when he spun and ended Albon’s race in the process which might not go down well if they end up being Williams teammates as expected next year.

Logan Sargeant was the final retiree of the Canadian Grand Prix and after spinning once going into turn six, caused terminal damage by hitting the barriers in turn four.

Speaking on The Fast and The Curious Podcast, David Croft was talking about Sargeant’s chances of staying in Formula 1.

Unfortunately, his latest performance in Canada has only reduced his very low chances of earning a new contract for 2025 and beyond.

Williams team principal James Vowles appeared to take a gamble on Logan Sargeant heading into this campaign.

Vowles told Sargeant he had to be the surprise of the season and it’s no surprise that he was the 20 driver to be rewarded with a new deal last year.

Sargeant has shown glimpses of his talent and it’s fair to say that not everything has gone his way this year.

He had to give up his chassis to Alex Albon in Australia forcing him to withdraw from the race.

The Thai driver has also been preferred whenever Williams have had an upgrade available but that’s partly his fault as well.

Williams have been behind their rivals in certain aspects of the car’s development but that’s because both drivers keep crashing and creating more damage for those back in the factory to fix.

Unfortunately, Croft believes that Sargeant simply hasn’t done enough to earn a new contract in Formula 1.

Even after reaching Q2 on Saturday, individual mistakes cost him the chance to add to his only career point.

Logan Sargeant coming to the end of his Formula 1 career

Talking about Williams’s weekend in Canada, Croft: “Nothing he [Alex Albon] can do about that, Logan [Sargeant] I’m sure he could have done a bit more to stop himself spinning out.

“With all due respect to Logan Sargeant, your number one target at Williams is Carlos Sainz, they’ve admitted that.

“There’s a very good chance Carlos Sainz will go there and even if he doesn’t, there are better drivers on the market than Logan Sargeant who has really not proved himself in a way that you would need to be considered for that Williams seat for a third year.”

Sargeant’s management have held talks with Haas over one of their two available seats but he doesn’t appear to be near the top of their shortlist.

James Vowles made his position clear in Canada that he’s desperate to sign Sainz and thinks Williams need two world-class drivers to compete next season.

All that’s left to see is whether Sargeant sees out the rest of the campaign with Williams and what he does next.

Mercedes might sense an opportunity to put Kimi Antonelli in his seat once he turns 18 to prepare him for life with the team in 2025.

Williams also have several young drivers of their own they could choose from including Monaco F2 winner Zak O’Sullivan.
