Former Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has just made ‘surprise’ move this summer

Liverpool fans will have interesting memories regarding former defender Mamadou Sakho to say the least.

The centre-back spent four years at Anfield, making 80 appearances for the Reds between 2013 and 2017.

Both Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp worked with the Frenchman, whose time on Merseyside was disrupted by injury.

But he still played an important role at times under both managers, having moved to Anfield from French giants PSG.

No honours were clinched with the Reds, with Sakho only managing a runner-up spot in the 2015/16 Europa League and League Cup.

Mamadou Sakho lands new club in Georgia

He left for Crystal Palace in 2017 in somewhat acrimonious circumstances after falling out with Klopp, initially joining the Eagles on loan before a permanent move.

The central defender, who has 29 France caps to his name, then returned to Ligue 1 in 2021 to join Montpellier.

And as reported by GOAL, the 34-year-old has now found a new club, making a ‘surprise’ switch to Georgian club FC Torpedo Kutaisi.

Having been without a club since leaving Montpellier in November, the centre-back will now link up with former Blackburn Rovers manager Steve Kean at Torpedo.

Former Liverpool defender set for hybrid role

It is by no means just a player role in store for the former French international, with Sakho set for an important job at his new club off the pitch.

As per Torpedo’s Instagram, the defender will serve as an ambassador to the international football community, helping mentor young players in the academy.

Liverpool fans will be wishing their former player well in his new position, but will be more focused on the current defensive situation at Anfield.

At £26million, Sakho remains on the list of Liverpool’s most expensive transfer sales of all time, with current centre-back star Virgil van Djik among their most expensive signings of all time.

The Netherlands international, currently on duty with his country as they prepare for Euro 2024, is set to play another crucial role at Anfield next season.

He does, however, need help, with Chelsea star Levi Colwill one defender that the Reds have on their radar.
