‘At this stage’: Journalist refuses to rule out 142-race F1 driver being ‘binned’ during the 2024 summer break

The Canadian Grand Prix was one of the most entertaining events of the 2024 F1 season so far, with five drivers still in contention to win the race heading into the closing stages.

Max Verstappen once again came out on top and Red Bull benefitted from a double retirement from closest rivals Ferrari after they took a big step forward in Monaco.

There were also plenty of storylines further down the grid as well with many drivers still trying to prove their worth with seats and contracts up for grabs.

Daniel Ricciardo made out on top in the battle of the RB drivers after receiving some heavy criticism from Jacques Villeneuve.

Both Haas cars provided some brilliant entertainment at the beginning of the race when they started on the wet tyres and quickly made their way through the pack.

However, as they crossed the finish line, it was Alpine pair Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon who had another disagreement.

Speaking on the RacingNews365 Podcast, journalist Ian Parkes has shared his thoughts on Ocon’s future.

He admitted that the situation at Alpine is getting so bad that he could see the 142-race driver being ‘binned’ during the summer break this season.

Esteban Ocon being ‘binned’ by Alpine during the summer break not ruled out

It’s been an eventful few weeks for the Alpine team with team principal Bruno Famin having to make some big decisions.

After the pair clashed during the opening lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, Ocon was forced to apologise for nearly costing his team their first point of the season.

It was then announced that Ocon and Alpine would be parting ways at the end of the season after five years of working together.

Alpine made their feelings clear at the end of the race who they were prioritising after Ocon was asked to let Gasly pass.

He did so, begrudgingly, but despite Gasly failing to overtake Daniel Ricciardo in front, Ocon was never handed the place back.

It created further tension in an already uncomfortable situation and Parkes now wouldn’t be surprised if Alpine let Ocon leave during the summer break.

They would then have the rest of the season to analyse one potential candidate to replace him full-time in 2025.

Jack Doohan could benefit from early Esteban Ocon exit

Speaking about the Frenchman’s future, Parkes said: “Esteban’s [Ocon] got a seat elsewhere and the likelihood is it’s with Haas just to let people know that there’s where he’s likely going to end up alongside Oliver Bearman next season.

“At this stage, I’m not going to rule out the possibility that he could be binned maybe over the summer break and they bring in Jack Doohan for half a season, for the second half of the campaign, to give him a run to them build him up, give him the confidence going into 2025.”

Alpine thought they had the perfect opportunity to assess Doohan’s ability in Canada.

He was handed Ocon’s car for the first practice session of the weekend but the weather denied him any meaningful laps.

It would be a surprise if Doohan wasn’t given another FP1 session sooner rather than later, especially if Alpine are serious about promoting the young Australian.

However, Famin might be forced to take action if Ocon and Gasly’s relationship deteriorates further.
