‘They’re like…’: Luke Young shares his first impression of Wrexham owners McElhenney & Reynolds

Luke Young has now revealed his first impressions of Wrexham owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

Wrexham captured Luke Young from Torquay United in the summer of 2018.

At the time, the Welsh side were managed by Sam Ricketts and were gearing up for an assault on the National League title.

Fast forward six years and Wrexham are now owned by Hollywood superstars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

The Reds are currently going through the most successful period in their recent history following consecutive promotions, with Phil Parkinson preparing his squad for a big challenge in League One.

During this period, Young played a prominent role in midfield, amassing over 250 appearances while captaining the side to success.

Unfortunately, the 31-year-old was released from his contract at Wrexham this summer however, the midfielder was just as shocked as anyone when McElhenney and Reynolds purchased the club.

Luke Young reveals first impressions of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

When the global superstars purchased the Welsh side in February 2021, it left many in a state of shock and at first, they weren’t expected to achieve success.

Although they’ve owned successful businesses, owning a football club is a different kettle of fish but through their passion and ability to hire the correct personnel, McElhenney and Reynolds were an instant success.

Speaking on the Rob Ryan Red podcast, Young has now explained what it was like when he first met the Hollywood duo, explaining how they’re ‘genuine people’ who only want the best for the town.

“As soon as you meet them and speak to them, they’re like genuine people, they really are,” Young said.

“You take your hat off to them, putting in the time and the effort they have done into this football club, not only from a footballing point of view, but also a community point of view as well.

“Everything they’ve done is for the best of the club and town. They’re doing that in abundance and I’m sure they’ll continue doing that in the future.”

How outsiders perceive Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

Many celebrities, specifically global superstars, are stereotyped as out of touch with the real world and trapped in their own little bubble.

That isn’t the case with McElhenney and Reynolds, as, despite their success as actors and businessmen globally, they’re two very down-to-earth people.

This is shown in multiple capacities, including their willingness to donate thousands to charitable causes, communication with the players and their interaction with supporters on social media.

The Welcome to Wrexham documentary, which follows their journey as owners, also shows their passion for the football club and the wider community.

Instead of shutting themselves away in the United States, McElhenney and Reynolds act more like fans rather than owners, sharing supporters’ ambitions of one day reaching the Premier League.

Given how they’ve transformed the town of Wrexham and acted as trailblazers for the next crop of celebrity owners, they deserve far more credit from outsiders looking in on their success.
