Turkey sees first major forest fires as extreme heat hits

Turkey and Greece are struggling with unusual heat for the time of year, as Turkey reports the first major forest fires of the season.

Five different fires broke out on Wednesday, two of which were under control by late afternoon, according to Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli on X.

Forest fires in the provinces of Istanbul and Izmir are under control. Further fires continued to rage in the west of the country and on the Black Sea.

Numerous firefighting aeroplanes and helicopters are being deployed.

Warm air masses from North Africa will continue to ensure temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius in places in Greece and Turkey until at least Friday. The heat is not expected to subside until the weekend.
