Newcastle United could reignite move for forgotten Arsenal star after twist in £20m saga

Newcastle United may rekindle their interest in one Arsenal outcast this summer if they cannot get one other deal over the line.

Aaron Ramsdale is likely to be keen to leave Arsenal in this summer transfer window.

The England shot-stopper has lost his starting berth at the Emirates Stadium. Having been usurped by David Raya last season, he now needs to seek pastures new in order to get his career back on track with regular game time elsewhere. Arsenal are aware that Ramsdale is likely to depart the club.

Of course, this means that Mikel Arteta will need to source new cover for Raya in the transfer window. There are a number of goalkeepers who could take up this role for Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have shown an interest in signing Ramsdale in the past, but have now opted to focus their attentions on Burnley’s James Trafford.

However, it now seems that the Magpies’ pursuit of the 21-year-old has hit a roadblock, meaning they may now reenter the race for Ramsdale.

Newcastle could perform transfer U-turn for Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale

As reported by GiveMeSport: “It’s understood that Newcastle remain confident they can secure the deal for Trafford – they value him at around £20m this summer.”

However: “Newcastle’s valuation of Trafford is currently below Burnley’s demands and the Magpies could turn their attention to Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale if they are unable to come to an agreement with Burnley.”

What Arsenal must do if Newcastle make move for Aaron Ramsdale

If the Tyneside outfit give up on Trafford and formalise their interest in Ramsdale, then the Gunners must be firm and resolute in their stance as the selling club. Whilst it is in Arsenal’s interest’s to move the 26-year-old on, they need to ensure that they extract maximum value from the player.

Whilst he has fallen down the pecking order in North London, the 5-cap England international has proven himself to be a brilliant goalkeeper. He has shone at Premier League level in the past, and ought to still have his best years ahead of him.

Sporting director Edu must demonstrate his nous as a salesman and ensure that the Gunners aren’t pressured into letting the goalkeeper depart for a cut-price fee. Arsenal paid £30 million to sign Ramsdale from Sheffield United and he has enhanced his reputation significantly since then.

In the meantime, Ramsdale’s full focus will be on helping England at this summer’s Euros tournament. Whilst he will be second fiddle behind Jordan Pickford for the Three Lions, he will still be keen to impress Gareth Southgate on the training ground.
