Exclusive - Manchester United make Mason Greenwood decision during end of season review

Manchester United’s end of season review was completed this week, with Erik Ten Hag maintaining his role as manager the headline news.

However, a number of other decisions were made during the process which was overseen by INEOS sporting director Sir Dave Brailsford, their sporting CEO Jean-Claude Blanc and United technical director Jason Wilcox.

Ten Hag was informed of United’s decision to retain him as manager earlier this week, but others within the club were impacted by the review – including Mason Greenwood.

United have been assessing their options with Greenwood and minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe admitted earlier this year that they had not ruled out bringing him back to the club.

HITC can now reveal that during their end of season review, which ultimately concluded Erik Ten Hag would remain at the club, the subject of Greenwood was assessed.

Man United review confirms intention to sell Mason Greenwood

We understand it was decided during the process that Greenwood would not be reintroduced to the first-team picture at Old Trafford and the club would actively look to sell him.

HITC is told that United value Greenwood at around £50m and have made his suitors aware of the fact that they would prefer a sale.

As HITC previously revealed, Greenwood’s camp have been eager to remain in Madrid after his year on-loan in Getafe.

Atletico Madrid are very keen on Greenwood, but their attacking priority at this point has emerged as a target man and they are in talks to sign Girona’s highly-rated striker Artem Dovbyk.

But their interest in Greenwood remains – although a permanent move looks out of reach, indeed none of his suitors look like being in a position to do so.

Barcelona were also hugely impressed with Greenwood during his stay in Spain, but bringing in Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams is their transfer priority.

Juventus hold talks joining Atletico Madrid and Barcelona in Greenwood hunt

As well as Atletico, HITC can confirm that talks have been taking place with Italian giants Juventus – who are keen on bringing him to Turin.

However, Juve already have a number of deals in the works as they look to tie up moves for Michele Di Gregorio, Riccardo Calafiori and Douglas Luiz – indeed they are only able to pursue the Aston Villa star as they planning to send two players the other way.

They are also talking to Atalanta about Dutch star Teun Koopmeiners – meaning to finance Greenwood they would almost certainly need to sell players in order to land him, unless United sanction a loan which is an option they are considering.

Now Juve and Atletico have both spoken to United about a possible loan deal.

HITC understands United would consider another loan move for Greenwood, but they would not want it to not be a straight loan with an option to buy. They want mechanisms built in that would see it become mandatory if certain criteria is met.

United have known for a while that loaning Greenwood was a likely outcome and as such they informed him last month that they would be taking up a one-year option on his contract, which would tie him to Old Trafford until 2026.
