Mike Tomlin downplays the meaning of his contract extension

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin was recently given a new contract extension. It’s a deal that is set to keep Tomlin in Pittsburgh through at least the 2027 season.

Now, since news of the contract extension has become public, Tomlin downplayed the meaning of it and insisted that his focus is on the task at hand in Pittsburgh.

“To be quite honest with you, it just means I don’t have to field questions about it,” Mike Tomlin said. “I’ve seen more days than I am going to see on this job, man. I’m focused on 2024 and have been and that’s my mindset.”

Interestingly, this contract comes after a season where rumors were swirling about Tomlin’s future in Pittsburgh. Those rumors got to the point where he even needed to confirm he’d be returning to Pittsburgh for the 2024 season, which he was under contract for even without his extension.

“Again, I don’t focus on what’s in my rearview,” Tomlin said. “If there’s a secret, the secret is I’m focused on the challenges and tasks at hand and not my resume. I could care less about my resume.”

The 2023 season ended with a 10-7 record, which was good for third place in the AFC North. That was good enough to make the postseason, where the Steelers went out in their first game at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.

2024 will be Mike Tomlin’s 18th season as the head coach of the Steelers. To this point, he has put together a record of 173-100-2. Along the way, he’s won a Super Bowl, won the division seven times, and has taken Pittsburgh to the playoffs 11 different times, including in three out of the last four years.

As a franchise, the Pittsburgh Steelers are known for sticking with coaches and having longevity within the organization. In fact, since 1969, the Steelers have only had three coaches with Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher preceding Mike Tomlin.

Art Rooney II on Steelers extending Mike Tomlin

Art Rooney II, the Pittsburgh Steelers President, released a statement following the announcement that the team was extending Mike Tomlin.

“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” Rooney II said.

“Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”
