'He was always hesitant'... NFL expert praises Andy Reid for doing one thing Bill Belichick did not

Andy Reid had catapulted his name up into the Mount Rushmore of all-time NFL head coaches because of his tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The man dubbed as ‘Big Red’ was waiting in the airport to accept the head coaching role with Arizona Cardinals when he was intercepted by the Chiefs.

Reid had an overwhelming respect for the Hunt Family and agreed to take charge of the Chiefs who were in disarray.

Andy Reid sacked in Philadelphia after no Super Bowl success after constant postseason heartbreak

After failing to get over the hump, the three-time Super Bowl winner was fired by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The 66-year-old lost one Super Bowl against the New England Patriots and suffered defeat in four NFC Championships.

However, with the discovery of the holy trinity of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones, success has come in abundance.

Reid penned a new deal through to the 2029 season, despite rumors circulating he could retire after their Super Bowl LVIII success.

Reis’s new deal allows him to break two all-time coaching records

The new extension has made him the highest-paid NFL head coach and he is on course to break Bill Belichick and Don Shula’s outstanding records.

Reid currently averages 12.5 wins per season with Patrick Mahomes under center and will smash the all-time regular-season wins record if he maintains this average through to 2029.

In addition, Reid can see Bill Belichick’s all-time playoff victories record insight at 31.

Belchick’s ring record of six as a head coach is closer than it seems and with Mahomes trying to chase Brady’s feat, the pair have all the motivation needed.

Comparisons have been drawn to the greatest head coach of all-time Bill Belichick and Reid since his immaculate success.

However, former NFL scout John Middlekauff believes that the former NFL head coach always tried to nurture his future coaching staff and rarely appointed anyone he had not mentored.

Former NFL scout praises Andy Reid for hiring outside of his coaching tree

Unlike Andy Reid, who would think ‘outside the box’ with some of his coaching staff decisions.

“When you look at Andy Reid and what he has done in Kansas City he went outside the box a little bit. He didn’t know Eric Bieniemy when he originally hired him, David Toub, it’s not like they had worked together with the Eagles.

“Here’s one thing with Bill, he was always very hesitant to hire outside, his coordinators were always guys who worked their way up. From Josh McDaniels to Patricia to Brian Flores, he (Belichick) liked getting you on the ground floor and creating you.”

Middlekauff suggests that Belichick may have missed a trick because he was so skeptical about hiring from outside his coaching staff.

Belichick endured a sour end to his historic tenure in New England and there has been reported hostility between himself and owner Robert Kraft.

Ultimately, Andy Reid has been happy to take a risk outside of the coaching tree that he has created.
