Fabrizio Romano explains what’s really been going on between Atalanta’s Ederson and Liverpool

Liverpool don’t appear close to making any significant signings during the transfer window so far.

Reds fans will be hoping for a couple of additions at least as Liverpool aim to improve on their third-place finish last season.

With Arne Slot now in place for the past couple of weeks, the Reds are finally able to start planning the make-up of the first-team squad.

What is most clear is that Liverpool could do with a new centre-back. Their current options are perhaps not enough to get them to their goal of winning the Premier League title.

But aside from a additional defender, it’s obvious to some that Slot needs to bring a new midfielder to Anfield. And it’s even more blatant that Atalanta’s Ederson could be an excellent fit.

Fabrizio Romano explains Ederson ‘situation’

Ederson has emerged as a possible target for Liverpool as they look to shore up their defensive midfield options.

The 24-year-old had a brilliant season with Atalanta and is now preparing for the Copa America with Brazil. He’ll be one to keep an eye on in the USA.

With the transfer rumours swirling, Ederson spoke out on his future on Wednesday. Although he’s seemingly happy in Italy for now, the Brazilian also admitted to being ‘curious’ over the Premier League.

Should Ederson eventually make that move, it could well be to Liverpool. Journalist Fabrizio Romano has already claimed that the Reds have been in contact with Ederson over a potential move.

And now, taking to his Daily Briefing column, Romano has expanded on the current situation between Liverpool and the midfielder.

“The Atalanta midfielder has responded to the links with Liverpool, but what’s the situation?!” poses the transfer expert.

“Liverpool made contact with his agents weeks ago but never started any negotiation, they didn’t send a bid so far, there are no talks ongoing at this stage.

“We have to see if they will include Ederson in their shortlist or not, it’s really early for this and there are no meaningful changes to the situation so far. Atalanta, meanwhile, don’t want to lose both Ederson and Koopmeiners.”

Will Liverpool sign Ederson?

In our opinion, this is sounding ominous for those who would like to see Ederson at Anfield next season.

Although it’s perhaps positive that talks have seemingly taken place, we think that if Liverpool wanted to take things further then they would have by now.

It is true that Ederson is currently away with Brazil and focusing on the Copa America. That makes doing any deal a little more tricky.

But if the Atalanta man was really the one they wanted, Liverpool would have found a way.

Instead, we don’t think the Reds will target a midfielder at all this summer. A centre-back seems to remain the priority, while a wide forward is also wanted.

Obviously that could still change and no doubt Romano will let us know if it does. But we won’t necessarily be holding our breath.
