'Fact': Liverpool have been in touch with £40m player and his family, they're 'very close' - journalist

Liverpool are quietly working to position themselves for future signings.

Although the summer transfer window is yet to officially open, some supporters may be getting worried over Liverpool’s lack of action.

The Reds are in need of one or two signings in order for Arne Slot to be in the best position possible to succeed.

While there have been so many links to different players, nothing concrete has yet materialised at Anfield. That will hopefully change over the coming weeks.

In the meantime though, Liverpool are reportedly already putting plans in motion for future transfer windows.

Liverpool make contact over Archie Gray

The Liverpool squad is probably just a couple of players short of really challenging across all competitions next season.

However, it shouldn’t be overlooked that some of the academy players who came through at the end of the Jurgen Klopp era will also improve and become more genuine options.

And as Liverpool watch youngsters like Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah develop, word is that they have been looking to bring one more of the country’s most outstanding teenagers to the club.

Archie Gray had a breakout season with Leeds United. And speaking to the Just Joe Football Show, journalist Ben Jacobs says Liverpool are working to woo Gray for a transfer down the line.

“Look at Liverpool who are very close to the Gray family,” says Jacobs. “I know for a fact that the player, his family and the people around him respect people at Liverpool that have made contact with the Gray camp. Particularly the chief scout at Liverpool, Barry Hunter, who’s a top operator.”

However, although Liverpool have been in touch with Gray over a move to Anfield, Jacobs says that this is likely laying the groundwork for a transfer some time in the future.

“I would be relatively surprised if the clubs being mentioned, particularly Liverpool, come in right now for this kind of move,” he reports. “Unless they’re prepared to sign him in order to own him and get ahead in the race and then loan him back to Leeds United. Because how many games would he play next season under Arne Slot.

“In the Gray family’s opinion, the best place for him right now is still ultimately at Leeds United. It’s going to take something pretty special or pretty urgent financially speaking from Leeds’ perspective to change that.”

Could Liverpool sign Gray this summer?

Liverpool have clearly been enjoying what they’ve seen from Leeds under Daniel Farke. The Reds have reportedly been targeting a move for Crysencio Summerville, too.

Despite the Summerville links though, Gray is the player we’d rather Liverpool sign.

At just 18, the England U21 international clearly has a huge future in-front of him. Having played much of the season at right-back, Gray has even earned comparisons to Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Obviously, that kind of talent comes with a big price-tag. There have been reports that Leeds would want at least £40m to sell Gray this summer.

In our opinion, that will be enough to put Liverpool off for the time being. With other areas needing to be strengthened, a player like Gray should not be a priority right now for the Reds.

With Hunter putting in the effort though, this is likely one that will be revisited in a year or two.
