Shane van Gisbergen revealed that he chipped his two front teeth during the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Portland International Raceway earlier this month. On the Stacking Pennies podcast, co-host Corey LaJoie asked van Gisbergen about the incident.
“I did yeah on the curbs I think,” van Gisbergen (also known as SVG) said. “There’s not too many photos of it.”
LaJoie added, “He said he looked like Lloyd Christmas from Dumb and Dumber. Like what lap was that?”
Van Gisbergen responded, “I just finished the race and I went, ‘Man, oh that’s not right. Oh s***. Try to cover it up. Try not to smile too much.” LaJoie then asked van Gisbergen if he had to go to the dentist. “Yeah, I got them fixed up pretty quick,” he said.
“That’s how aggressive NASCAR racing is, you’ll chip your teeth out there,” LaJoie replied. Van Gisbergen may have suffered an embarrassing injury during the Portland race, but he got the win. Van Gisbergen earned his first victory in his NASCAR Xfinity Series career at Portland, passing Justin Allgaier on the final restart with four laps to go.
“What a day, really cool, had some great racing,” van Gisbergen said at the time,per NASCAR.com. “I need to get better on my restarts and learn how to position, but that was so much fun. Really cool racing. I love these cars, they’re great.”

After winning the Portland race, SVG followed it up with a victory at Sonoma last weekend. But the win didn’t come without controversy as he got into it with Austin Hillin the final laps of the race.
“I hate racing and thinking like that, but to me, we’ve both taken a race win off each other now,” van Gisbergen said. “I don’t know. I didn’t go into the corner planning to take him out. Like, I wasn’t going to hit him off the track, but I was gonna try to pass him and I did everything I could. And when he kept choosing left on restarts, I was like ‘Oh, that’s surprising,’ because I chose the left on the first restart and it was a mistake. And if I had the opportunity again I would have chosen the right every time.”
SVG, 35, won his first NASCAR race last year, earning first place at the Cup Series race in Chicago. He’s known for being a top Supercars Championship driver, winning 81 races and three championships.
