‘Would have helped’: Timo Glock shares the ‘problem’ Mick Schumacher faced that caused his Haas career to fail

The name Schumacher is one of the most synonymous with Formula 1 and comes with its own pressures.

Michael Schumacher was a seven-time world champion and his brother Ralf Schumacher was no slouch either, challenging his brother for years at the front of the grid in the early 2000s.

Michael’s son Mick Schumacher followed in his father’s footsteps after winning Formula 2 and Formula 2 in back-to-back years before earning a promotion to F1 with Haas the following season.

However, Mick Schumacher’s time in F1 didn’t go to plan and he’s now spent two seasons off the grid looking for a way back in.

Speaking on the Formula For Success Podcast, former driver Timo Glock has shared what he thinks went from for Schumacher during his time in the sport.

He’s not sure that the young German driver was in the right environment to succeed once he found himself in the paddock.

Timo Glock shares his thoughts on Mick Schumacher’s Formula 1 career

There was an awful lot of excitement around Mick Schumacher ahead of the 2020 F1 season.

His fantastic form during the second half of the previous campaign in F2 to win the championship suggested that he could be the real deal.

Unfortunately, Haas had one of the slowest cars on the grid that year and both he and teammate Nikita Mazepin struggled to keep the car out of the wall.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner was already dealing with the slowest budget on the grid and the amount of damage they were having to repair slowed down any upgrades the manufacturer were preparing.

The following year, Mazepin was dropped by the team and Schumacher partnered with the more experienced Kevin Magnussen.

Although Schumacher finally got off the mark in the championship, Magnussen showed Haas what they were missing and the young German was replaced by fellow countryman Nico Hulkenberg the following season.

Glock has now shared why he thinks Schumacher found it so hard to succeed during his time at Haas.

The 25-year-old is hoping to make a return to the grid next year and already has one seat in his sights for 2025.

Timo Glock talks about the difficulties of driving for Haas

Talking about the different feel at different teams, Glock said: “I think if I jump to Mick Schumacher, this was one problem for Mick being in Formula 1 with Haas, with Guenther Steiner.

“I think that never felt like a family, traditional team and I think that would have helped him a lot.”

It’s hard to argue that Haas didn’t make the right decision replacing Schumacher with Hulkenberg, especially considering how important he has been to Haas sitting in 7 in the Constructors’ Championship this season.

Schumacher is now racing in the World Endurance Championship but that could lead him back into Formula 1.

The 25-year-old has joined Alpine’s team in WEC and the French manufacturer have at least one seat to fill next season after announcing Esteban Ocon’s departure.

Schumacher is said to be really pushing to join Alpine in 2025, however, it’s not looking particularly likely that he’ll be at the top of their shortlist.

He’s clearly a very talented driver, but Schumacher may have to continue pursuing a career away from F1 in motorsport.
