Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not ruling out the possibility of JR Motorsports being part of the NASCAR Cup Series. In an interview with Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports, Earnhardt talked about what his involvement would look like if his racing team took that next step.

“I’m almost feeling like that if I were to ever get involved in the Cup side, it would be like an investment — my personal monetary investment in something current,” Earnhardt said. “I would be open to talking to team owners about putting money into a particular singular charter and saying, ‘Hey, I’m going to park an investment here in this charter. I’m leaving that for my generations down the road, my girls and what have you.’ It wouldn’t be anything other than that.”

Earnhardt’s comments come as Stewart-Haas Racing announced it’s shutting down at the end of the year, and its four charters in the Cup Series are being picked up by different teams. Before talking to Pockrass, Earnhardt talked about the possibility of being part of the Cup Series on his Dale Jr. Download podcast.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. ‘still talking to people’ about Cup Series move

“We’re still talking to people,” Earnhardt added. “We’re still at the table talking to different teams about maybe partnering or investing. We’re always open to hearing what somebody thinks about what a partnership with us would look like. But none of them at this point have been like, ‘Oh man that’s a win for everybody.’

“For there longest time, me and Kelly(Earnhardt Miller) thought if were going to race in the Cup Series, we wanted to own and operate. We want to race it out of our building, we wanted to be able to choose crew chiefs and mechanics. We wanted to be the reason or be part of what the car was either successful or winning races or doing well on the track.”

As far as a charter goes, Earnhardt beleives that purchasing one would not be beneficial for his family. “I’m not buying a charter and putting millions of dollars away into something that I can’t then recoup or sell for a profit,” he said. “I feel like that would be wrong of me because of our legacy and my last name to buy into a charter then turn around and sell it a couple years later and try to reap a profit. If you’re going to get into this, you got to get in with commitment, not for the money. We’ve always raced to win a race and compete not thinking about it as a way to profit.”
