The odds are in for Tennessee and Florida State’s opening matchup in the College World Series. Per Draft Kings, Tennessee is a -166 favorite to win. In comparison, Florida State is a +230 underdog.

Tennessee is the No. 1 overall seed in the CWS. The Volunteers boast a collective 5-1 record through the regional and super-regional rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The team’s only loss came against Evansville in the Knoxville Super Regional.

In total, Tennessee has outscored its opponents 64-29 in the NCAA Tournament. While the odds favor Tennessee, history does not. A No. 1 seed has not won the CWS since Miami did so in 1999.

No matter what happens against Florida State, Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello wants his team to be able to look themselves in the mirror and be proud after the game.

“When we show up on Friday, we could either win or we could lose, but I would prefer when we get back on the bus to go back to the hotel, we won or lost as the 2024 Vols,” Vitello said. “By now, it’s deep enough into the season you guys can look from afar or our fans can make comments, but we know what that looks like and feels like.”

Florida State ready to shock the world

The Seminoles may be the underdogs against Tennessee, but they can still bite. FSU will enter Friday’s contest with a 47-15 record. The Seminoles are on a five-game win streak and are undefeated in the NCAA Tournament.

Most recently, FSU looked dominant in a two-game sweep versus UConn in the Tallahassee Super Regional. In the two games, FSU outscored the Huskies 34-12. The Seminoles have no doubt they can find similar success on college baseball’s biggest stage.

“We’re a very confident bunch,” starting shortstop Alex Lodise said. “We know we can play with the best. These are the seven other best teams in the country. We’re here because we can compete with them, and we know that watching them – when you watch other teams play, it’s knowing, like, with our confidence we’re here, and we know we’re capable of playing.”

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the two powerhouse programs clash. On Friday, Tennessee and FSU will go head-to-head at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
