Bewildered critics dogpile on FL congressman who wants to name U.S. waters after Trump

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) (House website).

Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) has come up with a novel way to profess his allegiance for former President Donald Trump: name an ocean after him.

According to Fox News, Steube introduced legislation Friday to "rename the immediate waters surrounding the U.S., called the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as the 'Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States.'"

If passed, the legislation would require the name change on any "applicable laws, maps, documents and other records."

"An EEZ refers to waterways immediately off a country’s coast where it can claim sole rights for fishing, drilling and other activities," noted the report. "The U.S. has the largest EEZ in the world at 4,383,000 square miles."

In a post on X proudly announcing his new legislation, Steube wrote: "President Trump took several commendable actions for our oceans as part of his work to make America strong, secure, and economically prosperous. Renaming our waters will serve as a reminder of his many contributions to our nation for generations to come."

Steube's proposal didn't sit well with everyone.

"You can name it the 'over my dead ass body economic zone.' In what planet do you people live in? Do you know half of your own base isn’t voting for Trump because they like him. They just dislike the President more, mainly due to maga misinformation," wrote Florida Democratic state legislative candidate Mike Harvey. "Is the GOP in a f---ing contest to see who can cult worship Trump the hardest?? Now we’ve got a congressman introducing a bill to rename the ocean after Trump. What the f---. Be normal you idiots," wrote anti-Trump influencer Peter Henlein.

"Why the hell is this anything close to a priority for you?" wrote the Trump-skeptic conservative account "Ron DeSwanson," a portmanteau of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who ran unsuccessfully against Trump in the 2024 primary, and Ron Swanson, the libertarian boss on the beloved municipal government sitcom "Parks and Recreation."

Steube has been known for his controversial behavior in office, including an incident in which he brandished a gun during a video call hearing about mass shooting legislation.
