NASCAR insider weighs in on potential Kyle Busch, Joe Gibbs Racing reunion

Could we see Kyle Busch reuniting with Joe Gibbs Racing next year? One fan asked NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass that question, and Pockrass shot the rumor down.

“I don’t see a JGR-KyBusch reunion,”Pockrass wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “Busch is signed through next year at RCR and while never say never, I see Busch back in the 8 next year.”

This comes as Martin Truex Jr. is expected to announce his retirement. Truex has been with Joe Gibbs Racing since 2019 and has contemplated retirement for the last few years. Joe Gibbs Racing currently has four full-time Cup Series drivers – Truex, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell and Ty Gibbs. Busch was with JGR from 2008 to 2022 before joining Richard Childress Racing in 2023.

“I have been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Mars for nearly 15 years now,” Busch said in a statement back in 2021, per NBC Sports. “During this time, Mars Associates have been like family to myself, Samantha, and Brexton. In particular, my friendship with the Mars Family will be something that will last a lifetime. We have a relationship so much deeper than just having the honor of driving their colorful cars.

“I’m also proud that we’ve been able to bring them to victory lane 55 times in the Cup Series, including two Cup Series championships. I know our (No.) 18 team will work as hard as ever to bring them to victory lane as many times as we can in 2022 and hopefully even another championship we can celebrate together.”

Will Kyle Busch keep his winning streak alive?

The focus for Busch right now is getting his first win of the year. Since 2005, Busch has won at least one Cup Series race each season and is now in danger of losing that streak. Former NASCAR star Kevin Harvick recently said on his Happy Hourpodcast that he “feels sorry” for Busch.

“Now I’m to the point where I’m starting to feel sorry for Kyle Busch because of everything that is happening,” Busch said. “He wrecked last week with Kyle Larson at St. Louis, went to Indy for the tire test and crashed, heard some rumblings that he crashed his rental car. And we go there [Sonoma], he ran off the track in practice, then he ran off the track at the beginning of the race, and then gathers it all up, he’s driving along, gonna have a good day, finally gonna get over this and wham. Ross Chastain wipes him out. Overshoots Turn 4 and wipes him out.

“He still finished the race, but he was in contention to have another top-five and kind of stop the bleeding but man, that wound is still open.”
