Michigan Wolverines basketballhas one scholarship spot to work with ahead of the 2024-25 season, head coach Dusty May‘s first with the program, and a new target appears to have emerged, per a report. The Athletic‘s Tobias Bass reported Thursday that Memphis guard transfer Jayhlon Youngis considering the Wolverines among other options. He’s also pondering a return to Memphis or transferring to Ohio State and Fresno State.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pounder does not appear on the On3 Industry transfer portal rankings. He has one year of eligibility remaining, after redshirting at Grambling State in 2019-20, playing two seasons at Baton Rouge Community College from 2020-22, spending one year at UCF in 2022-23 and competing at Memphis in 2023-24.
Memphis played May and American Athletic Conference foe Florida Atlantic twice last season. He didn’t play in the first meeting, before logging 7 minutes and registering no stats in the second matchup.
The Dallas, Texas, native played in 27 of Memphis’ 32 games, averaging 11 minutes per contest. He averaged 2.2 points, 1.3 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 0.8 steals per outing, while shooting 47.5 percent on twos (19-of-40), 30.8 percent on threes (4-of-13) and 76.9 percent from the free throw line (10-of-13).
Michigan has a point guard in junior Tre Donaldson, who transferred in from Auburn, and another with experience as a lead guard in North Texas graduate transfer Rubin Jones. Young could provide depth for May and Co. in a backcourt that also includes junior Roddy Gayle Jr.(Ohio State transfer), graduate Jace Howard and freshmen Durral Brooks, Justin Pippenand Lorenzo Cason.
Memphis finished last season with a 22-10 record, losing in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament, 71-65 to Wichita State.
In a small sample size, Young scored 19 of his 60 points in transition and produced 0.838 points per possession on ball screens in 2023-24, per Synergy. He made 48.5 percent of his shots at the rim and had a 50 effective field goal percentage on catch-and-shoot jumpers.
Young averaged 4.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2 assists per game at UCF in 2022-23. He scored 15.9 (2021-22) and 13.1 (2020-21) points per tilt in his two seasons at Baton Rouge CC, respectively.
A Dallas (Texas) Garland product, the Michigan transfer target was an unranked recruit in the 2020 class.
May has said the Wolverines could stay put and bank their final scholarship, but also noted that making an addition is possible, as well.
“It’s either going to be someone that really, really impacts today, winning immediately, and also fits into the group, as far as skill set and what the holes on our roster might be,” May said on the ‘Defend The Block’ podcast. “But we also might look at a developmental player, somebody that can help us down the line and learn and bang against these guys day in and day out. We’re looking at it from several different angles.”
