Report: Liverpool are waiting to see if Real Madrid fail to sign £50m player, they want to buy him

With the transfer window officially opening on Friday, Liverpool are yet to spring into life.

While there are plenty of reasons for the Reds’ lack of immediate action in the window, things can hopefully start to move over the coming days.

Arne Slot has been in the job for a couple of weeks now and although he hasn’t been seen at the AXA Training Centre, his work will be underway.

As head coach, most of Slot’s remit will be working with the Liverpool squad rather than focusing on transfers. However, the 45-year-old will surely have a say in who Liverpool bring in, too.

While assessing his new group of players, Slot will no doubt have come to the conclusion that a new centre-back is needed. And it looks like FSG are quietly working towards getting one for him.

Liverpool ‘waiting in the wings’ to sign Leny Yoro

Liverpool’s need for a centre-back should be the main priority of this transfer window. Following Joel Matip’s exit the Reds are a touch light at the back.

So far, there have been a whole host of defenders linked with moves to Anfield. And finally, something concrete has started to emerge.

Lille defender Leny Yoro has reportedly been high on Liverpool’s list heading into the summer.

The 18-year-old enjoyed a breakout season in France, with Premier League legend Thierry Henry describing Yoro as ‘extraordinary’ last November [Le10Sport].

Unfortunately though, it has been reported that Liverpool believe Yoro is going to Real Madrid.

This is a stance that is echoed by The Times, who claim that the youngster even attended Madrid’s Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund two weeks ago.

However, no deal has been agreed with the Spanish giants just yet, leaving Liverpool waiting to ‘pounce’ if things stall.

Man United are also said to be keen on Yoro, and join Liverpool in ‘waiting in the wings’ in case Madrid can’t get their man. Lille will reportedly let the centre-back leave for around £50m.

Is there a chance for Liverpool and Leny Yoro

Liverpool do not have pleasant memories of taking on Real Madrid in the transfer market or on the pitch.

The European champions have been a thorn in Liverpool’s side so many times during the Jurgen Klopp era.

As a result, no Reds supporter will be getting too enthusiastic about this one. How often do Madrid miss out on a target?

It often seems that once they let their interest known, a player will instruct his agent to shut down any other side. Inevitably, Real end up getting their way.

On this occasion, the only thing stopping that from happening would appear to be the transfer fee. Perhaps having spent so heavily on Kylian Mbappe’s wages on signing on fees, even Madrid will have to be realistic.

In that scenario, it would be great to see Liverpool land one of Europe’s top talents. But we won’t be holding our breath to see Yoro in red.
