'The most important player': Wayne Rooney backs former Southampton man to shine at Euro 2024

Wayne Rooney has backed this former Southampton man to shine at Euro 2024.

Euro 2024 gets underway on Friday with host nation Germany playing Scotland in the opening clash.

England and Gareth Southgate get underway on Sunday with a game vs Serbia, with Denmark and Slovenia the other teams in their group.

Southampton have a handful of players heading to Germany this summer with Che Adams and departing midfielder Stuart Armstrong playing for Scotland, and Jan Bednarek for Poland.

Russell Martin will be keeping a close eye on proceedings in Germany, with the Saints surely looking for some up and coming talents as they return to the Premier League.

Southampton beat Leeds United in the Championship play-off final last month to secure their immediate return to the top flight.

Several names have been linked with summer moves to St Mary’s. But Saints fans have been told to keep an eye on one former player at Euro 2024.

Wayne Rooney backs former Southampton man Angus Gunn to shine at Euro 2024

Joining Adams and Armstrong in the Scotland squad is former Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The 28-year-old represented England at youth level but has since earned 10 caps for Scotland, following his impressive performances with Norwich City in the Championship.

Last season, former Manchester City youngster Gunn kept 12 clean sheets in 40 Championship appearances for the Canaries.

Speaking on the Fan Debate Euros Special, former England striker Wayne Rooney gave his verdict on Scotland, backing Gunn to shine.

Rooney said: “I think the most important player will be Angus Gunn for Scotland.

“He has to be. I think if he has a good tournament, I think Scotland could get out of the group. If he doesn’t, then I think it will be difficult.”

Gunn joined Southampton in 2018 and made 30 total appearances for the first-team, keeping eight clean sheets before his departure in 2021.

Should Southampton have kept Angus Gunn

The goalkeeping department at Southampton looks set for some changes this summer, with Alex McCarthy out of contract.

Gavin Bazunu remains a prospect but Martin will need at least one more shot-stopper, and a more experienced one too.

Someone like Gunn who’s now gained some good experience on the club and international stage in the last few years could’ve been ideal for Southampton upon their Premier League return.

Rooney’s comments show just how well-regarded Gunn is among football fans and there’s no denying that he’ll be a crucial player for Scotland, in what is bound to be a tough Euros campaign for the Scots.

They play Germany in the opening fixture on Friday night. All eyes will be on this one and Southampton fans will surely pay close attention to how Gunn gets on.
