Katie Holmes is revealing how her style has changed throughout her life.
The Dawson's Creek alum, 45, has perfected her impeccable fashion sense over the years. However, Holmes' approach to the way she dressed had more to do with raising her daughter, Suri Cruise, 18, than anything else.
"When my child was really small, I was drawn to wearing a lot of dresses. You do go through these different phases of motherhood, and they inform what you feel comfortable in and what you don’t," the All My Sons actress noted in a recent interview. "So, over the years my style has changed here and there."
"I feel my education in clothes and their meaning came out of working in television and movies, working with great costume designers and having it explained to me what it means if a character has a cable-knit sweater over a plain sweater, and how that reveals a part of them, Holmes, who has her own collection with the French brand APC, said. "I fell in love with thinking like that, and letting the clothes really dictate a certain part of someone’s essence."
While parenthood and her career has made an impact on how she dresses, so has her location. "I like to mix and match classic pieces. I like vintage a lot. Living in New York City I have to have things that are practical and comfortable. The city influences my style," the former teen star spilled. "Usually I’m in ballet flats, sneakers, baggy jeans and a T-shirt. I like putting it together in a way that doesn’t look like you put it together."
Holmes admitted she's kept special items of clothing from her glamorous wardrobe over the years for her kiddo to later inherit. "I mean, I’ve saved some things here and there. But she has her own sense of style and her own expressions," she noted.
The brunette beauty has been gearing up for Cruise to head off to college after the teenager recently revealed she will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in the fall.
"My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident and able. And to know it," Holmes said of her child's growth in a 2020 interview.
"She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it," she continued. "Then she's like, ‘OK, I'm going to try the next thing.’ She's very focused and a hard worker."
